The Iowa Library Association fosters a community of innovation and advocacy, supporting and strengthening our members to promote libraries as an essential resource for all Iowans.
The Iowa Library Association was established in 1890. It is the second oldest state library association in the country. ILA has approximately 1300 members. Membership is comprised of librarians, library workers, trustees, students, and friends.

The State Library offers a range of programs that benefit Iowa libraries and the public.
State of Iowa Libraries Online, also known as SILO, offers resource sharing services, including the Iowa Locator, the statewide union catalog used to locate library items, and the SILO Interlibrary Loan System to all types of libraries in Iowa. SILO provides support and hosting for public library websites through the PLOW program. SILO also offers DNS hosting services to any public library with a high-speed internet connection.
SILO is a joint program of the State Library and the Iowa State University Library and is supported by federal funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
IA Shares is a statewide delivery service program that provides twice-weekly delivery of library materials for all public libraries and the State Library. The full cost of IA Shares is paid for with a portion of federal funding the State Library receives from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Academic Libraries

Any library in Iowa of a regionally accredited, post-secondary academic institution is eligible to be a member of the Alliance. The State Librarian or his/her designee is an ex-officio, non-voting member. A representative from the ILA-ACRL Executive Board may also be designated as a non-voting liaison to the membership. Institutions with multiple campuses are considered to be a single member provided that institution has a single administrative unit. Libraries may apply for membership by signing the Memorandum of Agreement and sending it to the Coordinating Committee for provisional approval. Membership status will be approved by a two thirds vote at the next membership meeting. Academic libraries outside of Iowa may apply for affiliate membership in the same manner
The Iowa Private Academic Library (IPAL) consortium was formed in 1977 for the following purposes: facilitating the sharing of information resources among the private academic libraries of Iowa; enhancing the availability of information resources to the academic community of Iowa; encouraging the private academic libraries of Iowa to institute such cost effective practices and procedures as may be made possible through state-wide interlibrary cooperation; enabling private academic libraries of Iowa to interact with state, regional, and national electronic bibliographic communications systems; and encouraging increased state and federal support of private academic libraries.
